How much is this going to cost me?

The Ratiu Center for Democracy and the Ibn Khaldun Center for Development studies are both non-profit organizations. You will be asked to pay a portion of the program costs to be determined soon. Costs should not be a reason not to join the network or apply to the program, as we can strategize together on how to accommodate all accepted enthusiastic students.

When are applications due and where can I find it?

Application due dates will be sometime in April 2008. Please continue to check the website to find out when we will begin accepting applications and when the exact deadline date will be. You can find what is needed for your complete application on the How to apply tab.

Who can apply?

Students between the ages of 18-24 are encouraged to apply who are from Arab, Eastern and Central European countries.

A small number of exceptional students who are not from the region, but interested in democratic development in the Arab World and Eastern and Central Europe will also be considered.

How will I know if I am accepted?

You will receive an email with an official response a week to a month after the deadline of applications.

What is the language of instruction?

The program is predominantly in English, so we ask students to have a decent grasp of English. The participants and organizers work together to aid students in being able to express themselves when they have difficulties.

What is the program timetable?

The program really begins before the camp itself through preparatory work using the website and reading materials. Last year, the Turda Democracy Gatherings took place from July 19-29. For 2008, the camp will be similar dates from around July 15 to the end of the month.

The camp will be made up of lectures, workshops, volunteering, and evening gatherings with professionals from different fields and supplemented by excursions around the region the camp will be held.

Where will the program be held?

The 2007 Turda Democracy Gathering was held in Turda, Romania, which is a town in the province of Cluj-Napoca.

The camp will be held in a mountainous resort in Romania, not too far away from a city. The exact location is yet to be determined.

Do I need a passport?

If you are a non-EU participant you will need a passport valid for six months after the date of travel. If you do not have a passport, please apply for one after you send in your completed application packages, so that if you are accepted we may begin working on visas shortly after.

Do I need a visa?

For non-EU participants, you will need a visa. The process is long and there are acute limitations to the visa policy. For this reason you should be sure to have a valid passport by the time of acceptance in order to work on it immediately. Please be aware that the visa policy is not in the hands of the organizers.
